Ginormous Goal Beginning-Scared of Utter Failure

Goodbye my lovely!!

I have decided on a goal. It's a big one. I'm going to give up soda. Again. For good this time. If you have been around me enough, you know giving up Dr. Pepper (in any of its forms) will be like giving up crack. It has been weighing on my mind lately. I have been realizing that I have a hard time going without it, and how much I really drink. Really, honestly and truly, I drink at least 200 oz a day. I just added up today's total. Yikes. It is bad for my health, and I know that. It is basically an addiction that I have to break. So, starting tomorrow, I'm going to stop drinking soda. I'm not going to substitute any other sodas for Dr. Pepper. I will be drinking water, juice, crystal light, lemonade, and milk.  This will not be easy. I am going to take it one day at a time starting tomorrow. Wish me luck!
Yes it will!!!

  1. Kudos to you for making a very healthy decision! 200 ounces is ALOT!!! A couple of years ago, I went from drinking prob 100 ounces of diet soda per day down to 12-24 ounces. I quit it entirely for a while, but have gone back to one or two cans in the morning (I don't drink coffee, so that's where I get my morning caffeine!). Anyway, I was completely off of it for about 6 months.

As a runner with only one remaining kidney, I was super worried about the effects that drinking so much soda was having on me...but I went back to the couple per day with the blessing of my kidney doctor :)

Might I suggest that you taper (now there is a running word we all can understand!) down instead of going cold turkey? Say, eliminate 25% the first week, 50% the next, then in 10 percent increments every other day until you've weaned yourself off? You know the headaches that come with giving it up cold turkey....just a thought!!!

Good luck and let us know how it goes! :)

  2. Wow, good luck! If you're drinking as much as you say you'll certainly have weight loss when you cut back or go cold turkey. It looks like 200 oz would be your caloric intake for the day but it should be food. I am a coffee drinker and creamer is my vice because I don't do artificial sweeteners so I've dropped it down to just one cup a day instead of my usual two. It's the creamer and sugar in the creamer that kills my diet. After my cup (occasionally I have two depending on how crabby I am) I switch to water. I think it's more difficult if you are a soda drinker. One of my coworkers is a Dr. Pepper addict and so is one of my best friends. I'm glad I never developed that addiction. I've yet to see them conquer it but you can do it Amanda. Just like your diet or quitting smoking you have to take one day at a time, one drink at a time, and give yourself a break if you have a "bad" day. ;) You can do it! Plus as runners we need to be hydrated which basically means drinking water constantly.

  3. Thanks guys. I haven't had any soda in weeks. I guess it has been about a month. I haven't lost any weight from it, but I'm so glad I gave it up. I know it was bad for me. I tried tapering before, but it never has worked for me. Cold turkey was best. I had some headaches in the first couple of days, but they are gone now. Nellie you are so right. Trying to run and being a soda drinker makes it difficult to remain hydrated.
